1. With profound grief and sorrow, we regret to inform the sad demise of Cmde ND Salwan VSM (40149 Y) on the morning of 19 March 2026
2. Commissioned in 1961, Cmde ND Salwan VSM joined NDA at the age of 15 (15th Course) and served in multiple postings across India and USSR.
3. He was the Engineer Officer of INS Kamorta in 1970, a singular achievement for a young Lt Cdr who was picked for the job, due to an unforeseen vacancy. He became fluent in the Russian language and soon became our expert on the Petya class which brought in many new technologies and concepts, which the Navy had to adapt to quickly. Subsequently he was appointed as Dy. Naval Attache, Moscow, between 1979-81.
4. As CO INS Shivaji from 03 Jan 1986 to 07 Aug 1988, he instituted many new projects which helped establish the 10+2 scheme as the premier cadre for technical officers.
5. He was also assigned the duties of Consultant to the Iranian Navy during Iran-Iraq war. In addition he also was chosen as Liaison officer to Adm Sergey Gorshkov, Fleet Admiral of the Soviet Navy during his visit to India.
6. An intense personality, his failing health prevented him from meeting former colleagues often enough, but did not prevent him from sending his greetings and encouragement to the fraternity. He will be missed at NFPC.
7. Following a Puja carried out at his residence, the funeral of Cmde Salwan was conducted at 1145 hrs at Bhairoba Crematorium Koregaon Park Pune. Commanding Officer INS Shivaji also attended the funeral as a mark of respect for the ex CO INS Shivaji.
8. On behalf of President and all the members of NFPC we offer our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the grieving family members. We pray that they bear the irreplaceable loss with courage and fortitude.
NOK: Mr Deepak Salwan, Son
