1. With profound grief and sorrow, we deeply regret to inform the passing of Commodore Nirmal Kumar Mukherjee, AVSM, VSM at 1640h on Friday, 20th February 2026, at Eastern Command Hospital, Kolkata. He was 90 years of age.
2. Commodore Nirmal Kumar Mukherjee (00397-A). joined the Indian Navy in 1951, as a Boy Entry, He stood first in his batch and was presented the Bosun’s Silver Pipe by the then President of India, late Dr Rajendra Prasad. He was commissioned into the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy on 01 November 1959.
3. During his long and illustrious career spanning over 38 years, he held several important Afloat and Ashore appointments, salients of which are as follows: –
(a) Afloat Appointments:
(i) Commanding Officer, INS Gharial.
(ii) Commanding Officer, INS Mysore.
(iii) Commanding Officer, INS Deepak
(iv) Commanding Officer, INS Shakti.
(b) Ashore Appointments:
(i) Command Intelligence Officer, HQENC (1971)
(ii) Commanding Officer, INS Agrani.
(iii) Commanding Officer, INS Chilka.
(iv) Commanding Officer, INS Angre.
(v) Deputy Director General NCC, Orissa.
4. As gathered from contemporaries and acquaintances, Late Cmde NK Mukherjee had built a reputation around himself to be a very able administrator who dealt every situation with firmness and dispassionately. Though he appeared to be very strict on the surface, he was always very soft from within, full of compassion and empathy for every subordinates.
5. Late Cmde NK Mukherjee is survived by his wife Mrs Roma Mukherjee, son Cdr Subroto Nirmal Mukherjee (Retd), daughter-in-law Mrs Asha Mukherjee, son-in-law Cdr Borun Ranjan Gupta (Retd) and daughter Mrs Aparna Gupta, grandson-in-law Mr Saurabh Juyal and grand daughter Vasudha Juyal. 5. Funeral and Last Rites of Late Commodore Nirmal Kumar Mukherjee, AVSM, VSM, were performed at 1800h on Saturday, 21st February 2026, at Keoratala Crematorium, Kolkata.
