Lt Cdr Onkar Chand

Dear Members,

1. With profound grief and sorrow, we deeply regret to inform passing away of Lieutenant Commander (SD-ME) Onkar Chand (85056-H) at 2308h on 9th February 2026 at Kailash Hospital, Sector – 27, NOIDA – 201301 due to Severe Chest Congestion and Cardiac Arrest. He was 89 years of age.

2. Lt Cdr (SD-ME) Onkar Chand was enrolled into the Indian Navy as a Sailor on 29th July 1953 and subsequently rose to be a Commissioned Officer on 30th September 1972 in the Mechanical Engineering Branch of the Indian Navy. He also specialised as a Ship’s Diver. He was awarded Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) for operating under hazardous conditions whilst at Sea. The Gallantry Award was bestowed on him on 26th January 1969 and subsequently the award of Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service.

3. During his service span as a Commissioned Officer he held following appointments: –

(a) Afloat Appointments.

(i) INS Gharial as Senior Engineer.
(ii) INS Ghorpad as Engineer Officer.

(b) Ashore Appointments.

(i) INS Shivaji for training from September 1972 to January 1973.
(ii) INS Circars duties with Command Diving Team from June 1974 to January 1981.
(iii) INS Circars on promotion continued with Command Diving Team from March 1982 to May 1986.
(iv) INS Angre duties with Command Diving Team from May 1986 to July 1988.
(v) INS Circars for duties with Command Diving Team.

4. Funeral and Last Rites of Late Lieutenant Commander (SD-ME) Onkar Chand were performed on 11th February 2026 at Antim Niwas, Sector – 94, NOIDA.

5. We pray to Almighty God to grant eternal Peace to the noble soul of Late Lieutenant Commander (SD-ME) Onkar Chand at his final resting place.

6. We convey our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to all members of the grieving Family of Lieutenant Commander (SD-ME) Onkar Chand and pray to Almighty God to grant them peace, solace, comfort, strength, courage, fortitude and forbearance to bear pain of irreplaceable loss.
